SOLIDWORKS Simulation Premium users can use different material models, such as nonlinear elastic, nonlinear plastic, Von Mises, or Tresca, to achieve accurate simulation results.

However, a more realistic simulation requires advanced material modeling capabilities, such as those offered by SIMULIA.

How SIMULIA Improves Simulation Results

On the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, SIMULIA provides advanced simulation capabilities that extend beyond traditional desktop tools. The Material Calibration app in the Structure Mechanics Engineer role allows users to determine the correct material model for given material test data.

For custom material definition in the Material Definition app, there are advanced options to select from. In particular, the Remove Failed Elements feature is designed to improve the visualization of critical regions in a simulated model that usually contains nonlinear material models. This feature is helpful in simulating machining operations, high-velocity impact and damage, ballistic or explosion, and 3D printing support removal.

How to Use Material Modeling

When setting up a simulation, material properties are assigned via the Material Definition app. The Simulation Domain command in the Material Definition app is where material properties are specified to simulate the behavior of the material.

Multiple material behaviors can be set up as required for a given material. As shown in the image above, when defining a material behavior, a set of applicable material options characterizes material behaviors such as Hyperelastic, Hyperfoam, Viscoelasticity, and many more. Of course, these require the properties or values to be entered into the simulation domain for complete material definition.

 

Using Advanced Methods for Simulation Accuracy

For high-strain rate deformation of metals, where material models such as Johnson-Cook Plasticity or Tensile failure models are used, the material behavior definition can include the feature Remove Failed Elements. Commonly referred to as element deletion or deactivation, this is used to model material failure and fraction by deleting mesh elements that meet specific failure criteria.

Tensile Failure Modes

With the Tensile failure model, this feature lets you control the deletion of elements for plastic material behavior. The failure criteria are based on four failure combinations that account for ductile shear, ductile pressure, brittle shear, and brittle pressure.

Johnson-Cook Failure Modes

For the Johnson-Cook dynamic failure model used in high-strain dynamic simulations, element removal can be enabled for failure criteria where pressure stress and deviatoric stress components are set to zero during the simulation. However, in simulations where the stresses are compressive, element removal must not be enabled.

Ductile Material Models

The damage modeling of ductile materials also includes the Remove Failed Elements option when the failure criteria are met. For elastic-plastic materials with isotropic hardening, damage can occur with degradation of elasticity or softening of yield stress.
